The first step to getting SSI is applying for SSI. is to submit an application for SSI. At its most basic SSI is money for those who are low income and are disabled. Most serious mental disorders would qualify for applying for disability. The problem is that the SSA measures disability by the ability to work. not the severity of the symptoms alone. The SSA does take that into consideration but if they believe for reason that you can still work despite your symptoms, they may deny your claim.
The first step is to go the the SSA office and set up an interview. When you go there, they will either give you a packet to be mailed back to them. The packet contains information about your medical history, disability, and work history. You can mail that into the SSA and wait for a response from them. You can also mail in other relevant documents to them that might help your case.
What are the basic requirements for SSI?
One: Severe Medical Condition
The applicant must have a history of or current serious illness. In regards to SSI for mental illness that would usually be bipolar, schizophrenia, psychosis, or MDD. In most cases the patient would have to have a serious mental disorder that has had a history of hospitalizations. This mental disorder must also be serious enough that the person is unable to maintain working.
Two: The disability must last at least twelve months
For mental illness this is less relevant. It means that the disorder is a long lasting one that is not transient. The disorder should be longer than a year or in the case of mental illness, be lifelong. The ability to work should be impacted too for 12 months.
Three: Minimal work ability or unemployed
To be approved for SSI, one should not be employed or work very hours. Having a full time demonstrates to the SSA that you may not be truly disabled and they may deny your case.. The federal limit for SSI is 750 per month per single person.
Four: Medical Records
Not having medical records does not de qualify you, but there is a very strong chance your case will be denied. Should your case be denied, you would do well with getting more information.
Together all of these factor into the initial application.
